Haringey E-Debate Project

Aims:

• To develop learning and teaching in PSHE
• To develop pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding in issues of PSHE and Citizenship.
• To encourage respect for all and develop pupils' abilities to debate and reflect on issues of concern.
• To develop teacher skills in supporting children in accessing the portal, setting up and responding to mail discussions and online polls
• To develop capacity to use video conferencing in each school (highlighting epals, global link, other schools with vc equipment)

The pupils will be encouraged to look at 2 topics relating to PSHE and through online debate in mail discussion and video conferencing technology, they will debate their views with pupils in their own and other classrooms in their borough.

Although the main focus of the learning is PSHE, the cross-curricular nature of this project will encompass Literacy and ICT, and potentially Science.

Scope:

For each phase (term) of this project, four classes, in four different schools would be supported. During the Autumn term 2005, four Year 5 classes will be supported. During Spring term 005, four Year 2 classes will be supported.

Curriculum coverage:

• to consider issues of PSHE, develop their skills, empathy and understanding and debate and reflect on these topics (PSHE)
• writing for an audience (Literacy)
• sending and receiving threaded discussion posts (email - ICT)
• looking at issues of health and physical wellbeing (Science)

PSHE at Key Stages 1 & 2:

• Issue 1: Nutrition and Physical Activity, School Dinners: Should children be allowed to eat chips every day if they want to?
• Issue 2: Emotional Health and Wellbeing, Bullying: Should bullies be sent to other schools?
